Make Your Own Wood Wall Sculpture
If you are looking brighten up your home with your own handiwork, you should consider making a wood wall sculpture that will accentuate any room. The task is fairly easy if you have done some wood carving in the past. However, here is a guide to a simple wooden carving.
The first step will be to gather your tools. You will be making a rough draft first, so have some paper, writing utensils and clay on hand. For the actual making of the wood wall sculpture, you will need a block of wood, carving tools, sand paper, paint brushes, wood primer, sealant and paint.
Now that you are prepared, you can start your project. Start out with drawing an outline or a rough sketch of your sculpture idea on a sheet of paper. Keep in mind that this an outline and that too for a wooden sculpture, so you don’t have to fill in the finer details of your idea, as once you start carving the features will emerge themselves.
After you have completed the rough draft, use clay to mold a small-scale model of your idea, you can use your hands, but for tough clay or more precision you can use clay sculpting tools. Once you’ve practiced on the clay and are satisfied with the result, you can start on your wood wall sculpture.
Draw out your design on one surface of the block of wood. Then use a saw or a relatable tool to cut out the large pieces of unneeded wood around the pencil outline. The finer details will be done once you’ve sculpted your wood in the general form of the figurine.
When you have carved out the general outline or shape of your sculpture, use a chisel or any other tools you feel is needed, to carve out the specifics and intricate details of the sculpture. This is the most important part of the whole process, as it makes each work unique to the carver.
The last thing to do is sand the complete sculpture for a smooth finished product. Make sure you sand over quite a few times until there are no rough edges. If you wish to decorate or use the sculpture in all its wooden glory, glaze the entire artwork with wood sealant to ensure longevity.
Of course, you can further decorate you handiwork. If you wish to paint it, use wood primer first in order to prevent deterioration of the wood due to the paint chemicals as well as other environmental factors. After this, you can paint and decorate it however you wish. Consequently, here you are with your very own wood sculpture to liven up your wall.
